How do Adhesive Tapes Stick to Surfaces

There are 2 basically different parts of tape’s sticky property; adhesion and adherence. Adhesion is the sticking force between two different materials, whereas cohesion is the binding force between two comparable materials.

When two products are brought into contact with one another, the surface molecules interact, giving rise to eye-catching forces that may be physical, electrostatic or chemical (corresponding to adsorption, covalent bonding or van der Waals forces, respectively).

When the molecules are comparable, as when it comes to two ‘glue molecules,’ the cohesive pressure causes the adhesive to stick to itself. When the particles are dissimilar, as when it comes to a glue molecule and a particle of the substrate (the surface the glue is sticking to), the adhesive pressure holds the glue to the substrate.

For this reason, the ‘stickiness’ of tape is caused by a combination of the molecular forces of the adhesive material adhering to itself along with keeping onto the substrate.
